Tane Mahuta, God of forest and birds

Child of our sky father Ranginui

and earth mother Papatuanuku

Why did you take my son?

Come Christmas your Pohutukawa will be weeping

Blood red flowers pouring from its boughs

Come Christmas I will be weeping

Joyous memories of sunny shade and summer fun

will just be painful reminders of what used to be

Tane ‘o’ Tane Lord God of the forest

You’ve forsaken my son

and you’ve forsaken me

The fruit of my loins died hanging in your tree
